Two ways to play Windows Media files (.wma / .wmv) in Mac OS X

November 24th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Software

I am sure many of you had problems while trying to run a .wma or .wmv file in Mac OS X. At this point (not sure why), there does not seem to be any popular plug-ins for Safari or Firefox to resolve this issue. By the way, incase you are wondering…

  • WMA is Windows Media Audio
  • WMV is Windows Media Video

And why is this important? Well…let’s just say, it is a ridiculously popular media format (highly Windows-centric though)
Safari cannot play these formats by default. Neither can QuickTime…(by default)! The following two software/plug-ins can be used to resolve the issues.

  1. Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X

2. Windows Media components by Flip4Mac for QuickTime (for Mac OS X versions 10.4.x or before)
(For Leopard users i.e. Mac OS X 10.5, you have to download a different version – Flip4Mac)

Out of the above two, Windows Media Player 9 is now being considered obsolete, even by Microsoft themselves (although it is still available for download). Therefore, Flip4Mac would probably be a better option.
