Explore Mars like never before, courtesy of NASA and Microsoft

Now that you are bored with your place of birth…planet Earth, it’s time to move on. If you plan to visit our neighboring red planet a.k.a. Mars any time soon, you may find this useful. A website called Be a Martian from NASA and Microsoft allows users to improve the existing maps of Mars. And while doing so, you will indirectly help scientists in their research. “People worldwide can expand the specialised efforts of a few hundred Mars mission team members and make authentic contributions of their own“, says Doug McCuistion of Nasa’s Mars Exploration Program.
But why do this? It is because the volume of data from Mars is huge, and NASA scientists require a significant effort to understand and classify all the data. Both Microsoft and NASA believe that a collaboration of thousands of users and participants will help scientist to create far better maps. So why not help them?
