Linux remains a very strong contender in the netbook world. Ofcourse being light weight and free are just some of the few reasons. Although the number of netbooks running Linux stands at around 11 million out of a total 35 million, the number is increasing gradually. As per ABI Research, things will get better and Linux will likely to overtake Windows by 2013 in terms of powering netbooks. Ofcourse if you consider Google Chrome OS, that will likely be achieved much ahead of time.

Although Windows 7 has been quite successful uptil now, a light weight OS like Linux still stays as the most preferred platform for most manufacturers, when it comes to netbooks.
