Light Tree, a solar powered street light imitating a natural look

March 3rd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Design, Science

Street lights are simple lights; truth is, we haven’t seen much of an art associated with them. They are normally sleek and stand tall to illuminate the roads. So how about a change as proposed by this designer. His idea revolves around a street light that would have a tree form with embedded nano-tube solar cells. The solar cells would store energy during the day to power up the LEDs at night. Along with that his concept also includes water inside the tree shape “to efficiently conduce the light generated by a range of ultra-bright LEDs placed in the base“.

The branch like structures of this Light Tree are also to have seeds on their ends which would sprout with the help of the water within, ultimately making the structure more life like. This Light Tree has been designed by Omar I. Huerta Cardoso. There had always been a connection between trees and light but this concept makes a wholly new approach in the form of glowing trees.
