As if pulling $2.7 billion from the box office wasn’t quite enough for Cameron’s Avatar. Other than being the highest grossing movie of all time, Avatar also broke the record for being the best selling film title on Blu-Ray. Almost 1.2 million Blu-Ray copies were sold on the first day of its release. This is twice that of Dark Knight which sold 600,000 copies when it was originally released in 2008. While it took 18 months for Dark Knight to sell 2.5 million copies, Avatar did that in just four days with 2.7 million copies.

Of course it was 2008 when Dark Knight was released. This is 2010. Technology moves faster than light. But that’s a different story.

The sales number will go even higher, when the movie title reaches other countries. The high numbers also prove that consumers are upgrading to Blu-Ray at a remarkable rate. As for Avatar DVDs, almost 4 million of them were sold during the same time.
