Musical Fishes

June 23rd, 2010 | 1 Comment | Posted in Science, Software

What’s music to your ears? There can be many; like the sound of a garden waterfall or the intermittent tinkling of wind chimes or rhythmic marching of soldiers! Since music is being discussed you must be wondering what do the fishes in five separate tanks have to do with it?

Named the Quintetto, the whole arrangement uses the movement of the fishes to produce music. Each of the aquarium is meant for a single instrument. As the fishes move randomly in their abode, the movement is recorded which is then interpreted into respective sounds of the separate instruments via a software. You don’t have to imagine what the combined effect would be for there’s a video below of the ‘fish-ical’ performance!

Quintetto is an idea from Quiet Ensemble founded by Fabio Di Salvo and Bernardo Vercelli, who thrive to produce music from such unique perspective. Quintetto has been awarded the third prize for “International Contemporary Art Prize – Celesteprize” in Berlin.
