The Cardboard Bridge

January 29th, 2011 | 8 Comments | Posted in Design, Environment

What you can see in the background is of course a bridge but surprisingly the material used to construct is mainly cardboard. As opposed to the popular notion of the capability of cardboard structures, architect Shigeru Ban uses the very product in erecting a bridge over Gardon River in southern France. Built out of 281 cardboard tubes with steps from recycled paper and plastic, the bridge is sturdy enough to withstand a force equivalent to the weight of 20 people at a single time.

The cardboard bridge will be on display for a month and a half  before being taken down prior to the rainy season.
