Amazing instrument named Years makes trees produce music

January 23rd, 2012 | No Comments | Posted in Science, Software

Unbelievable! Who knew trees could be musical as well? What you see in the picture isn’t a vinyl record but very natural wood discs with growth rings that has been set up such so as to produce music.

Growth rings, as we all know, are associated with carbon dating and deciphering climatic changes of the past. However with the help of a special instrument [ similar to a record player] called Years, the rings have been used to produce tunes. The complete contraption measuring approximately 90cm x 50cm x 50cm makes use of a “turntable, computer [Ableton Live], vvvv, camera, acrylic glass and veneer to create the amazing phenomenon.

The awesome player called Years has been conceived by Bartholomäus Traubeck. The musical suspense gets revealed in the video below. Enjoy!
