Apple declared that the company sold more than 2 million iPads in under 60 days. The iPad was originally launched in the US on April 3rd, 2010. Since then the device is selling at a rate no one quite predicted. Now, it is also being sold in the following countries, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. So only time will tell how many millions more it will sell.
The success of Apple’s iPad has already started showing its effect on netbook sales. As per Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, netbook sales have slowed down as early as January when Apple originally announced the iPad. While there was a 641% year-over-year growth rate for netbooks last summer, this year things are completely different.
Today Apple officially announced that the company sold their 1 millionth iPad on Friday (30th April), even before the completion of the first full month. In just 28 days since the product’s introduction in April 3rd, the iPad sales reached this number. Also, 12 million iPad apps were downloaded from the App Store, while over 1.5 million eBooks from the iBookstore.
As per the estimates from Chitika Research, an on-line advertising network which runs on over 80,000 websites world-wide, the current iPad sales may have exceeded the 600,000 mark. This estimate is based on the unique iPads connecting to the Chitika advertisement network. The company is currently putting the stats in real-time and seems to be fairly confident on the numbers. In fact Chitika says, that their estimate may be more accurate that Apple’s itself.
Apple reported that the company sold over 300,000 iPads by the end of Saturday (3rd April), which was the official launch day of the product. The number is an accumulation of all orders placed online, at Apple Stores and deliveries to all authorized retailers (e.g. BestBuy). That’s not all. Apple also reported that almost 1 million apps were downloaded on the same day while the total number of books downloaded was over 250,000 from the iBookstore.
So how many iPads did Apple sell up till now? The current estimate stands at 120,000 on its first day. The general trend shows that the WiFi (non-3G) edition sold more than 2X times the more expensive WiFi+3G edition. But when it came to memory capacity, the sales were evenly distributed. All 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB models were sold in almost equal numbers.
